10:00-13:30 Visit Zhujiajiao Ancient Town and Taste a Traditional Chinese Lunch

Although the atmosphere in Zhujiajiao is different from Venice, it is known as the “Venice of the East”, because rivers cross through the whole town. There are 36 old bridges and 9 streets built along the rivers. It is a pearl of southeast China.

More than 1,000 old houses standing on either side of the streets were built during the Ming (1368–1644 AD) and Qing (1644–1912 AD) dynasties. They are well preserved, along with some small shops, fish outlets, calligraphy shops and a few restaurants; and short boat trips on the river can be arranged.

You will visit several attractions, but the highlights are as follows:

  • The Qing Dynasty Post Office, built in 1892, was the first post office in eastern China. There you will see many curious objects, such as the fish-style envelopes used in ancient times, and get to know about the development of the Chinese postal service.
  • Kezhi Gardens, meaning gardens used for learning and planting, are tranquil and peaceful. There are rock formations you can climb and caves to walk into, and a fish pond where you can feed fish. There you will see many decorations and tiny bridges, much vegetation and furniture.
  • Fangsheng Bridge, linking the two sides of the main waterway, is a medieval bridge used only by pedestrians. It is best seen from the gondola you will take.

Lunch will be served in a local restaurant in town.

13:30-16:30 Visit Seven Treasures Town

Why is it called Seven Treasures Town? You guessed right, because there are seven treasures there: Buddha, bell, lotus scriptures, sacred trees, a gold chicken, a jade axe and jade chopsticks. It is said that originally there were 8 treasures, but one was stolen. So, the town was named Seven Treasures Town.

After visiting Zhujiajiao, we will go to Seven Treasures, built during the Northern Song (960–1127 AD) dynasty and gradually becoming a prosperous business center during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

The town is basically divided into 2 streets -- South Street and North Street. There are many delicious snacks on South Street. It often becomes a magnet to foodies and attracts people from all over the world, who come to taste its local snacks.

16:30-17:30 Transfer Back to Shanghai

You will leave for Shanghai at about 16:30 and arrive there at about 17:30. You’ll probably encounter some traffic jams on the way back.

We’d be more than happy to help if you need instead to be transferred to the airport, cruise terminal or train station. Please note that you should arrive at the airport 1.5 hours ahead of departure time for domestic flights, and 2.5 hours for international flights. Extra fees may be needed for these special transfers.
